People always present the most challenging and interesting scenarios for me as a photographer. Unlike shooting still life or landscape, a photographer has to contend with the individual's personality and their relationship to having their photo taken. I have yet to meet a person who likes to have their photo taken, so my approach is to try and get the subject to experience the process in terms of a theatrical event. This allows the subject to practice “the character” or persona they hope to put forward, usually leading to a relaxation of the body and the face. This approach usually leads to a more convincing, honest photograph in the end… maybe even something unexpected.
